Four Summer Weekend Trips for Allied Travelers

We have officially reached the midway point of the summer! Now that you’ve settled into your summer assignment and gotten to know your local area, it’s time to take advantage of the warm weather you have left. We’ve put together a collection of awesome weekend trips for you to take while the days are still long, and you can escape on an adventure. This selection of trips is broken down by region so that wherever you are in the country, you can take a drive or a short plane ride to experience what they have to offer. Take a look!

If you’re in the Northwest—Redwood National Park, California

The Pacific Northwest is one of the country’s most breathtaking geographical regions—boasting vast forests of the world’s largest trees and scenic views, dotting miles of northern California’s rugged coastline. Whether you decide to visit for a weekend or extend your trip, there are plenty of awe-inspiring activities at your disposal. You can take a drive through the park, taking in the might of the Redwood trees from your car, with plenty of places to stop and explore along the way. If you decide to make a trek of it, there are many national park campgrounds and free camping areas to bring you closer to the outdoors. Whatever your preference, make sure to bring a camera!

If you’re in the Northeast—Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

The storied island of Nantucket is a picturesque symbol of classic New England summer—complete with beautiful, dune-lined beaches and historical buildings lining the cobblestones downtown. Relaxing on the beach might be the main attraction of this tiny Massachusetts getaway, but you can also get lost in the museums, lighthouses, and wharfside restaurants that give Nantucket its reputation. A short boat ride from the mainland, Nantucket is an ideal destination to escape the hustle and bustle for a weekend away.

If you’re in the Southeast—Kiawah Island, South Carolina

If your ideal summer getaway consists of pristine sandy beaches, tropical vibes, and a round of golf at a renowned resort, then the barrier island of Kiawah might be the perfect trip for you. The warm waters of South Carolina beckon, whether you wish to swim in the calm waves or take out a kayak for a serene paddle along the coastline. Have your clubs ready to swing away, as you’ll have your choice of one of the five legendary golf courses speckled across the island—the Ocean Course having just hosted the PGA Championship in 2021. At Kiawah, the choice is yours whether your weekend is filled with activity or a beach chair in the sand, or both!

If you’re in the Southwest—Zion National Park, Utah

The historic Zion National Park—Utah’s first national park—is one of nature’s most iconic marvels. Part of Utah’s vast canyonland, Zion features massive sandstone cliffs and once-in-a-lifetime views of the American Southwest. Pack your hiking boots (and camping gear if you’re ambitious!), as you will have a world of outdoor exploration at your disposal—from day hikes through the canyons, to white water rafting trips down the Virgin River, to camping under the expanse of brilliant stars, Zion National Park can be a weekend utopia for the rugged explorer and the casual sightseer. Prepare to be enchanted!

We hope these summer destinations give you the inspiration you need to make the most of the remaining summer months while you’re on assignment. Each place can offer a unique experience fit for any weekend warrior—one connection between them being the blissful enjoyment of summer.
