CLS Traveler Finds Success in California

Originally from Russia, Oxana Foster attended the University of North Florida, where she received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in clinical laboratory science. Upon graduation, she took a full-time job as a clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) at the area hospital. After about two years working for the hospital, she decided to become a traveler and fulfill another dream of hers.

“I always wanted to travel, and being in this field is giving me a great opportunity to explore the country,” she said.

Without being tied to any significant obligations such as a nearby family or children, Oxana headed to California, where she not only wanted to experience the Mediterranean-like climate and majestic sites but also work in one of the best paying states for her line of work.

In addition, Oxana knew that being a traveler gave her a tremendous opportunity to gain experience.

“When you work in one lab you just do things one way, but when you work in different labs you can grow from learning other procedures and meeting new clinicians,” she said. “Also, traveling forces you to adapt to new environments and usually they are short-staffed, so you are challenged to be a quick learner.”

Oxana said California has a lot of opportunity for her because of a shortage of CLS workers due to a wave of retiring colleagues. That puts the labs in a position to expand training to its workers, and this is giving Oxana the chance to grow professionally at a fast rate.

Southern California Bound

Her first job as a clinical laboratory scientist was in Oceanside, California, a popular, classic Southern California beach town known for its shoreline, surfing, great restaurants and easy access to San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.

After working in Oceanside, she traveled further south for her current assignment in San Diego, a vibrant metro loaded with miles of sandy beaches, world-class attractions and the distinguished nickname of “America’s Finest City.” Oxana said the sight-seeing is impressive and she loves to hike all throughout San Diego and its surrounding areas.

But it isn’t just the beautiful sites and weather that caused Oxana to take another assignment in California. She said the training she continues to get is invaluable and she is happy to get up and go to her job every morning.

“My top three reasons for staying in California are the money — the pay is excellent,” she said. “No. 2 is the willingness of employers to train you, even if you are new to your field. And third is, of course, the sight-seeing. I have been here for a year and a half and I have traveled all over California, from San Diego to San Francisco and Napa Valley. I even drove to Mexico, which I wouldn’t be able to do if I wasn’t living and working in Southern California.”
