Medical technologist jobs are based in a clinical lab setting and focus on analytical testing of body fluids and samples including but not limited to blood and urine. Medical techs often prepare blood for transfusion and assist in the diagnosis of bleeding disorders. Toxicology screens are also included in the medical tech job description; an advanced level of thinking and judgment skills is also needed to successfully evaluate lab data collected by these processes. Med techs work in a wide variety of medical facilities, including clinics, hospital labs, research facilities, public health laboratories, and industrial and military labs.

Medical technologist salary rates vary, but, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, MTs can expect to receive an average hourly wage of about $27, with an average annual salary of approximately $58,000.
