Job Description and Responsibilities
A social worker can serve in many different roles within their discipline. This includes specialties such as social work administrators, researchers, planners, and policymakers. A social worker who works in this area researches and analyzes policies, programs, and regulations.
Education and Training
A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) is the minimum education standard required to enter the field of social work. Most advanced social work, such as training in health, school, and clinical settings, requires a master’s degree. Higher education and research positions typically require a doctorate in social work.
All U.S. states and the District of Columbia require a license in social work. Additionally, each state has specific requirements for certifications and continuing education that must be met to obtain or retain a license in social work.
