Working under the direction of physical therapists, licensed physical therapist assistants possess a great deal of responsibility in providing treatment and rehabilitative services to patients who have experienced injury or disabling disease. Physical therapist assistants provide patients with exercises, massages, electrical stimulation, paraffin baths, hot and cold packs, traction and ultrasound, among other assigned duties. These individuals are also responsible for the monitoring and documentation of patient treatment and response.
The work environment of a physical therapist assistant includes a variety of allied healthcare facilities, such as outpatient treatment centers and clinics. Schedules often vary and may include part-time, full-time, night or weekend shifts. The nature of the work of a physical therapist assistant is such that it may involve physical exertion in the lifting and transportation of disabled persons. For this reason, physical therapy assistants may be asked to be in moderately good physical condition.
